Showcasing BPI’s dedication to social justice with studio film production

Considered one of Chicago’s most tenacious and versatile advocates for the public interest, BPI Chicago is a nonprofit law and policy center with a 50- year track record of innovative and effective advocacy across a broad range of civil rights and social justice issues. Today, BPI is deeply involved in police accountability, criminal justice reform, housing, and early learning.

BPI reached out to Mainstream because their needs were two-fold: first, they were looking for a production partner who could produce a series of compelling videos. Second, they were looking for a production team to live stream their 60-minute long program video across multiple channels. Additionally, BPI knew they wanted an accessible event for their audience and looked to their streaming partner to deliver on that goal.

Because Mainstream was able to meet both their production and live streaming needs, awarding us this project was an easy decision for the BPI team. Having a one-stop shop, with a single project manager who led all of Mainstream’s internal teams, created a smooth experience. That meant they could focus on the things that mattered most: raising important funds to advance their mission and cultivating their audience.

Oh, and did you see the live ASL interpreter? He really understood the assignment and enhanced the overall event accessibility, which is always a plus!

“The Power in Community project was a favorite of mine because it showcased many of the core services that Mainstream provides: live streaming, video production, studio space.

As is so often the case with video production, no matter how many pre-production timelines are in place, many editing deadlines came down to the wire with a few last-minute client requests. But everything came together in time for the stream, showing the power of teamwork and benefit of having your editors work at the same organization as your stream team!

With a newly on-boarded Director of Development and an ever-busy Director of Communications, our creative team was assigned the task of developing the storyboard concept for the organizational video. Although there was limited b-roll footage to work with, we worked to capture additional footage and utilize recent Zoom footage (after all, we had been living through the pandemic for 18 months at that point) to make that story come to life. We wanted to create something evergreen so BPI could maximize its use and their dollars.

Using BPI’s new logo and brand guidelines, we designed an impactful broadcast graphics package that kept things visually appealing at all times. Mainstage hosted a day of in-studio pre-records, filming Executive Director Cara Hendrickson and event emcee Lolly Bowean. Then began the task of editing all of the pieces of the video puzzle together into a meaningful finished product.

I know I speak for the entire Mainstream team when I say, it is incredibly fulfilling when we work with local community agencies making a difference in our hometown of Chicago. In 2021, BPI’s annual event focused on the fight for justice and the need to leverage the incredible power that lies in communities. We were honored and privileged to play even just a small role in affecting that change.”

“THANK YOU for your work and partnership on our event! Very much appreciated all that you did to bring our vision to life. The response has been overwhelmingly positive with people often saying that they felt invigorated by the program and the flow. They were impressed with the visuals as it offered vibrancy and vitality. And let me tell you, the signer you brought on board to do the ASL was AWESOME! his style and swagger added a really nice touch.”
